Synopsis - En route to Ferenginar, Nog and Jake are attacked by a Jem'Hadar warship and rescued by a group of elite cadets aboard the Defiant-class USS Valiant, NCC-74210. The Valiant and her crew were on a training mission-turned secret mission when the war started.
Valiant pits a group of young cadets in a wartime situation, doing the same jobs as men and women twice their age; and although they can apparently do the same jobs just as well; when the screw up, they're inexperience causes it to be big time. Captain Watters mistake was in thinking he could destroy the new Dominion ship on his own without taking the plans back to Starfleet for a thorough investigation by Starfleet intelligence; a mistake that cost him not only his life, but the life of nearly his entire crew. This episode sees the return of the elite group of cadets known as Red Squad; first heard about in the fourth season 2-parter Homefront/Paradise Lost. Also returning from that 2-parter is actor David Drew Gallagher (not to be confused with child actor David Gallagher of the popular series 7th Heaven) as Red Squad Cadet Riley Shepard. We now know that Starfleet has indeed been working on building other Defiant -class starships; and that they don't have cloaking devices.
