Synopsis - The Defiant picks up a distress call from a Starfleet Captain, marooned on an L-Class planet, and hasn't much time before she dies from the planet's poisonous gases. Meanwhile, Quark uses Odo's one-month anniversery with Kira, to perform an illegal transaction; while Jake researches Quark for a novel.
The Sound Of Her Voice is interestingly played with the primary guest character lending only her voice. The stories that are shared between Lisa and the Defiant crew are interesting; but even more interesting is the insight she perceived into each of their characters. It was again nice to see Jake pursuing one of his novels; showing that he is in fact still working on them, in addition to his work for the Federation News Service. It was also refreshing to see Odo's surveillance of Quark, the way we haven't seen much of since the second season; and how Odo cut him a break this time. Also nice to see the continuance of the Odo/Kira romance.
This episode can be perceived as the calm before the storm of an upcoming turning point in the war. The episode points out traditions that have fallen away with the war. O'Brien points it out best in his final speech of the episode, when he tells how the war has pulled them apart; changed them.
O'Brien's closing, when he says that someday, one of his friends would be missing from the circle, is a foreshadow of the season finale, in which Jadzia Dax will die, as actress Terry Farrell made the decision to leave earlier this year. If you look closely, you can see a hint of guilt on Terry's face as Colm Meany delivers O'Brien's lines.
