Synopsis - As Bashir, O'Bien and Quark head off with Worf and Martok to honour Jadzia by getting her into Sto-vo-kor, Kira defies Admiral Ross's wishes by setting up a blockade around the moon with the Romulan hospital. Meanwhile, after introducing herself to Ben, Ezri Dax heads of with the three Sisko men to Tyree in search of the Orb of the Shadows And Symbols.

Shadows And Symbols furthers the circle from Image In The Sand by bringing to light the truth about Sisko's birth mother. That she was actually a Bajoran Prophet whose essence is stored in the Orb of the Shadows And Symbols, and had shared existance with the coporeal creature Sarah Sisko in order to conceive and bear a son who would one day go on to become the Shadows And Symbols of the Prophets to Bajor: Benjamin Sisko! This in turn explains why Sarah never stayed with Joseph. More on the baseball here, when Ezri takes the ball from Ben's hand and throws it, it lands where he remembers seeing it in his vision from the prophets; telling him this is where to dig.

This episode also goes back to the famous 5th season episode, Far Beyond The Stars; in which Ben has experience life as one Benny Russell, a Black science fiction writer in 1950's New York City, who started writing stories about Deep Space Nine. As we return to Benny Russell's life here, we see he is in a mental institution for being "to wrapped up" in his stories about Deep Space Nine. However we learn from the Prophet of the Orb of the Shadows And Symbols that Benny Russell was actually a false vision from from the Pah-Wraiths, what the Prophets term the Kosst Amojan. What is still not fully explained here, but what I would assume to be is that the Benny Russell story is Sisko's glimpse at the war between the Prophets and the Pah-Wraiths; with Benny's continuance on writing Deep Space Nine being the will of the prophets and all the attepmps at stopping him being the will of the pah-wriaths. Also, in the tradition of Far Beyond The Stars of having DS9 regulars and semi-regulars fill all speaking parts we see here Casey Biggs, alias Gul Damar, sans make-up, in the role of Doctor Wykoff.

Other notes of interest, the banter between Quark and Worf was amusing and very well done as the headed of to destroy the Jem'Hadar shipyard; too bad they didn't have metaphasic shielding on their Bird-of-Prey, or they could have gotten closer to the sun's corona. And speaking of the Bird-of-Prey, the was the first time we'd seen use of a Klingon deflector dish, located on the ship's under-belly; cool effect. The Bajoran/Romulan confrontation was also good; amusing how it was Admiral Ross, who wasn't even supposed to be involved in the conflict who folded for Senator Cretak.

And finally we got to know Ezri Dax. Her story is very interesting indeed. The fact that she had no training or preparation or even desire to join allows us much more of a glimpse into seeing what it's really like to be joined, as we will be going with Ezri as she discovers all the things most joined-trills take for granted; such as separating her likes and dislikes from those of her previous hosts, just like the Raktajino she ordered in this episode.
