Synopsis - As Ezri Dax has trouble renewing old friendships, she considers returning to her post as assistant counsellor aboard the Destiny. Sisko tries to convince her to stay aboard DS9 as a full counsellor by getting her to help Garak deal with clausterphobia. Also, Worf has trouble accepting Ezri as Dax.

Afterimage is all about sorting out past problems so that one can move on; all tied through Ezri Dax. First, although Ezri may posess Jadzia's memories, she is not Jadzia. We see the troubles she goes through of trying renew Jadzia's friendships aboard the station; while also trying to keep 8 lifetimes of memories sorted in her mind. This is heightened when Ezri is told off by Garak in that she doesn't live up to her previous hosts; which sends her to the point of resigning from Starfleet. We also see how she draws a parallel between Garak's clausterphobia and her own space sickness, for never having forgiven herself for the shuttle accident that killed Tobin, Dax's second host; and Garak never having forgiven himself for allowing his father to lock him in closets as punishment. Speaking of Garak, we learn about the hardships he's had to face since his people allied themselves with the Dominion. We learn that he still likes to think of himself as very much a Cardassian, and is disgusted with himself for betraying his people by helping Starfleet, all in the name of putting and end to the war. Finally, we see Worf's Klingon stubborness as he refuses to learn how Jadzia would have wanted him to treat Ezri; due to his confusion of how to accept her as Dax, while believing that Jadzia has gone to Sto-vo-kor. And although, he is unable to completely sort out his feelings by the end of the episode, in a touching final shot, we see him lift his cup of bloodwine to her as a show of respect for her.
